I'm Janet VanD and I love creating art from LEGO®. Although I come from a family of artists and as a child I enjoyed sketching and illustrating, I never considered myself talented enough to go anywhere with it. I also really enjoyed playing with LEGO® but as I grew up both art and LEGO® fell by the wayside and everyday living took over.
It was only years later when I realised my two passions could be combined and thus brought to a new level that things started to come together (literally!). As a horticulturalist and smallholder I am particularly fond of all things organic and natural so I try to encorporate this aspect into my work. I do, however, like to vary my subject matter as much as possible in order to explore new techniques and challenges.
There is a unique challenge when choosing LEGO® bricks as media. One must work within the limitations of a finite number of pieces, shapes and colours, yet with enough creativity the possibilities are limitless.
A further bit of paradox for me: LEGO® is of such high quality that the bricks are practically indestructable yet my models are ephemeral. Some models, once built and exhibited for a reasonable length of time, are broken down so I can reuse the (very expensive) parts in new models. Not all models are broken apart, though, as I can get a bit emotionally attached to them!
